Terrain modelling software | Edificius | ACCA software

3D Digital terrain modeling with the BIM software Edificius.

Edificius has all the tools and functionalities of a specific digital terrain modelling software.

The software functions for terrain modelling in Edificius allows you to:

  • rebuild a topographic survey, even complex, from land surveys in DXF/DWG CAD file formats, or even from Google Maps™ satellite imagery
  • reshape the land with real earthworks (earthworks, fills, escarpments) automatically obtaining all relevant metric data for the calculation of earthwork surfaces and volumes
  • integrate terrain modelling with all other landscape design elements (trees, vegetation, roads, yards, walls, garden furniture, etc.)

A Digital Terrain Model (DTM) is a digital model of the earth's surface that includes elevation data.

DTMs can be generated from different sources, including aerial photographs, satellite images, surveys in different formats (IFC, DWG and DXF) or directly from Google Maps®.

Once collected, the data can be processed and converted into a 3D model of the earth's surface. DTMs are useful in different fields (environmental planning, engineering design, etc.) and for different purposes (hydrological analysis, generation of topographic profiles and contour lines, analysis to support urban and spatial planning, etc.).

DTM, DSM and DEM are all statistical surfaces.

"A statistical surface is a representation of the distribution of values of a given phenomenon defined, for each pair of coordinates (X, Y), by a measured or calculated value of Z" (Robinson et al., 1995; DeMers, 1997).

Specifically:

  • DTM stands for Digital Terrain Model and is a digital representation of the earth's surface without considering the other elements that cover it such as vegetation, buildings, etc;
  • DSM stands for Digital Surface Model and is a digital representation of the earth's surface and everything that covers it;
  • DEM stands for Digital Elevation Model and is the general elevation model that includes both DTM and DSM.
Rebuild a complex topographic land survey | Edificius | ACCA software

Rebuild a complex topographic land survey

Quickly rebuild the BIM model of a complex topographic survey working directly in plan view (2D) or in 3D. Get professional results in an extremely simple and intuitive manner with contour lines, topo plans and elevation nodes.

Automatically acquire all the information (planimetric and height) from topographic land surveys in both 2D and 3D CAD file formats or directly online from Google Maps™ satellite imagery.

Import topographic land surveys as DXF/DWG CAD files and automatically generate the digital terrain model using the “DXF/DWG” survey recognition tool.

Specify an area to be detected directly from Google Maps™ and, with a simple click, automatically rebuild the elevation profile thanks to the powerful Google Maps™ satellite imagery Importer.

Digitally model any sort of terrain by means of advanced modelling tools such as the the “Contour Line” and “Topographic Contour plan” objects with contour lines or triangulation vertices at known altitudes. The elevation node allows precise terrain modelling details (small localised soil depressions or mounds) with known elevation node values.

You can represent existing waterways (sea, rivers, lakes, etc.) and even design custom shaped swimming pools, fountains, ponds and small streams using the “Expanse of Water” object.

Use various levels of earthworks that are neatly organized into project levels | Edificius | ACCA software

Use various levels of earthworks that are neatly organized into project levels

Terrain and outdoor spaces can be modeled according to progression stages (by earthworks, cut & Fills, escarpments, etc.) in different project levels. Terrain metric data, including volumes and surfaces, are continuously calculated and updated dynamically in relation to each project phase.

Other advanced modelling tools, such as the “Earthworks” and “linear excavation” tools, allow an anthropic approach to terrain modelling. Insert cuts and fills, trenches, embankments, fixed section excavations and of any shape or form. The terrain model will automatically adapt to the profile of the inserted objects by automatically adapting the surrounding where necessary.

The object “Terrain Area” object allows you to visually define different terrain materials on the soil surface, to represent the different soil configurations (soil, grass, rocks, etc.) or represent particular grass turfs and mulches when addressing gardens and outdoor spaces design.

Complete terrain model with trees, roads and furniture | Edificius | ACCA software

Complete the terrain model with trees, roads and furniture

Outdoor spaces can be enriched with urban or rural landscape elements such as trees, bushes, plants, roads, squares, yards and furniture, etc.

The “Tree” object pushes your gardens and outdoor spaces design further by supplying a wide range of high quality photo-realistic tree types, bushes and plants, that can easily be downloaded from the program’s on-line catalogue.

The “Vegetation” object speeds up vegetation input by automatically scattering these elements over specified surfaces or along paths. The vegetation is distributed randomly at terrain level according to various parameters such as density, size and disorder for a much more visually realistic effect.

The “Road and Yard” objects allow you to insert paved walkways, paths, bike paths, etc. with great ease and by defining any form or material. The “Solid on terrain” object gives the designer even more creative freedom to draw using solid extrusion profiles to model curbs, gutters, etc.

The “Landscaping wall” object, used for representing retaining walls, garden walls, etc. automatically adapts the surrounding terrain by generating the necessary backfill volumes. The “Panel” object can model trellises, fences, gates, etc. Other specific objects, such as the “Flower beds and Swimming pools” allow easy modelling of land filled areas, flower beds and pools of any shape and material including lifelike wave animations, ripples, reflections and light refractions on the water surface.

The “Shed” object brings extra design flexibility to model sheds and gazebos or other architectural elements. The 3D Model allows you to insert external 3D source objects created with other 3D solid modellers and supplied in many widely used formats (.3ds, .skp, .obj, .lwo, etc.) to complete your digital terrain model with typical landscaping design elements such as benches, street lamps, fountains, etc.
